An all-time favorite is the wooden Pound a Peg or Hammer Bench. It is one of the toys they are allowed to hit to their little heart's content.

In this version, the pegs have a little lip at the bottom so they won't be able to come out. They also sit on little wooden see saws so while one side gets hammered down, the other side gets pushed up. No need to pull the pegs up or turn the bench over.
